Poland, officially known as the Republic of Poland, is a country located in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the west, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south, Ukraine and Belarus to the east, and Lithuania and Russia to the northeast. Poland has a population of over 38 million people and Warsaw is its capital and largest city.

 

The country is divided into 16 voivodeships:

  Poland has a diverse landscape that includes coastal lowlands, uplands, mountains, lakes and rivers.The northern part of the country is characterized by a coastal plain along the Baltic Sea, while the southern regions are dominated by the Carpathian and Sudetes mountain ranges. The Tatra Mountains, part of the Carpathian range, are the highest mountains in Poland (with Rysy, the highest peak, located on the border between Poland and Slovakia, 2,499 meters/8,199 feet above sea level). Major rivers in Poland include the Vistula (the longest), Oder, Warta, and Bug. Poland also has several national parks and natural reserves that preserve its rich biodiversity and natural beauty. Notable parks include the Białowieża Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the last remaining primeval forests in Europe, as well as the Tatra National Park, home to diverse flora and fauna.
